Domestic violence ruins lives everyday and sadly remains taboo in many of our communities
S. was identified through our partnership work with Positive Action for Refugee and Asylum Seekers, who sent her to our weekly drop-in service. S. had fled a terrible domestic violence situation in another city and was staying with a distant family friend in Leeds. This accommodation was temporary and they could not accommodate S. and her daughter any longer. Give A Gift carried out a needs assessment and found a nearby hotel for S. and her daughter, until her temporary accommodation was ready. Our volunteers organised a rota to ensure S. and her daughter had food on a daily basis and the team also provided emotional support over these difficult days.
Through our support, a women’s refuge was identified outside of Leeds. The Give A Gift team provided assurances, to reduce her anxiety, that the refuge would be suitable and safe for their needs and helped with the transition. They are now settled into the new environment and in a much better physical and mental well-being state.
